Burnout syndrome is a state of long-term exhaustion, fatigue and diminished interest occurring in response to an intense work in a stressful environment. It usually occurs when people suffer at their workplace from rigid rules and bureaucratic constraints, lack of support, lack of sense of their duties, excessive requirements (both from superiors and internally posed). The main elements of burnout include:
- Mental, physical and emotional exhaustion – feeling of fatigue, emptiness and unwillingness to work as a consequence of a being highly involved, especially emotionally;
- Cynicism, withdrawal, depersonalization;
- Inefficacy and reduced sense of personal achievement.
Burnout symptoms vary between professions and individuals, however these warning signals are common to the majority of people: strong reluctance to going to work, anger and irritability, indifference, negativity, daily fatigue and exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, problems with sleeping, frequent colds, flu, headaches, digestive disorders and other diseases without recognizable cause, frequent absence from the workplace.
The topic has been well studied by psychologists for nearly 40 years, so we now know quite a lot about and have effective methods of preventing and dealing with burnout. In our approach we use the tools and follow the advice of the world's best specialists (C. Cherniss, Ch. Maslach, A. Pines, J. Fengler, H. Sęk) combined with the methods of existential and humanistic psychology.
